The History of Aberdeen Township in Monmouth County, NJ 07721
The Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the first inhabitants of what is now New Jersey. An agricultural society emerged around the year 1000, and small hamlets dotted what would become New Jersey. In response to European settlement and illness, the Lenape began a westward retreat beginning in the late seventeenth century, with Monmouth County being their first location. Despite living in Ontario and Oklahoma today, names such as Mohingson Creek, Luppatatong Creek, and Matawan Creeks attest to their presence.
The first attempt at European settlement in the area occurred in 1650, when the south side of Raritan Bay was purchased from the Lenni Lenape by the New Netherland Colony.
In 1677, Sir George Carteret granted 36 acres to Jonathan Holmes in New Aberdeen as the first English estate in the region. This is on Mohingson Creek in Oakshades today.
On November 8, 1977, the residents of Matawan Township voted to rename the Township in order to have their own distinct community identity. Residents voted to rename their municipality Aberdeen Township. Officials felt that the new name would draw attention to the Township, which is given top billing in New Jersey’s 566 municipalities according on alphabetical order.
Today, Aberdeen is a suburban municipality of 5.4 square miles that includes residential, light industrial, and retail sectors. Cliffwood, Cliffwood Beach, Freneau, Oakshades, River Gardens, Strathmore , Woodfield are just a few of the areas in the Township. The area is divided into three ZIP codes: 07721, 07735, and 07747.
The Township is served by two volunteer fire companies: the Aberdeen Township Hose and Chemical Company Number 1, founded in 1918, and the Cliffwood Volunteer Fire Co., formed in 1927. The Aberdeen Township First Aid and Rescue Squad, formed in 1954, and the South Aberdeen Emergency Medical Service, established in 1970, are two volunteer first-aid squads that respond to community emergency medical needs. In 1935, a full-time police force was created.
Aberdeen Township is located in Monmouth County and is one of the state’s finest communities to call home.
