Experts believe the first inhabitants of Colts Neck were American Indians from about 6000 B.C., due to tools and other artifacts found in the area The Unami Indians, also known as the Turtle Clan, were affiliated with the Lenni Lenape. The Unami called what is now New Jersey “Scheyichbi,” and gathered near the present-day Obre Road in Colts Neck for socializing. In the early 19th century, four Native American trails connected trading partners and villages before the Lenni Lenape tribe left for New York. They did so because of disease and rising tensions between European settlers and members of their tribe.

Colts Neck is known for its horse farm history, spacious residences, picturesque small-town feel, and location along the Jersey Shore. Just 45 miles south of New York City and not much further from Philadelphia, Colts Neck is part of one of the nation’s most vibrant areas. Today, Colts Neck has an area 31.7 square miles with a population of around 10,000.
