Middletown Township was originally formed on October 31, 1693, and was incorporated as a township by the Township Act of 1798 of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. Portions of the township were taken to form Atlantic Township (now Colts Neck Township), Raritan Township (now Hazlet), Atlantic Highlands, Highlands, and Keansburg. The settlement’s prosperity was boosted in the mid-nineteenth century after the completion of a major railway junction. By 1900, it had transformed from a collection of loosely linked fishing and agricultural hamlets into a fast-growing suburb.
