Rumson is a town in in Northeast Monmouth County in NJ. It is near the Raritan Bay and a part of the New York Metropolitan Area. Hazlet, NJ has a population of around 7000. Rumson, NJ’s close proximity to lower Manhattan via New York Bay has attracted wealthy financiers and industrialists since the 1800s. Rumson was first settled by English colonists in 1665 but didn’t become a playground for New York’s wealthy until the Sea Bright Bridge across the Shrewsbury River opened in 1870. The town’s convenient location to Manhattan allowed rich families to build summer cottages there and hire renowned architects.

With an area of 5.2 square miles, Rumson is bound by the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers, and is just a mile west of the Jersey Shore coastline. It continues to draw the likes of Wall Street executives who use a 45-minute high-speed ferry to Manhattan’s financial district.

Rumson is not only home to grand houses. Between the mansions are charming cottages and bungalows, and residents who care about the beauty of this seaside gem. There’s no need to splurge on a summer house if you live in Rumson. Golf, tennis, swimming, sailing, and fishing are among the many activities available to residents and tourists. With six public parks, a public boat ramp, an active recreation program, and the newly restored Bingham Hall Community Center, there really is something for everyone.

The Sea Bright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club has a long and illustrious history, having been founded by Rumson’s elite in 1877 after tennis was introduced in the United States. The club still enjoys an active membership today, with facilities that include 15 lawn tennis courts, 15 Har-Tru courts, one hard court, and four platform courts. The club is featured in the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

The Rumson Country Club, founded in 1908, provides golf, sailing, tennis, croquet, and a 40-slip boat mooring for visitors. The Riverhouse is its newest waterfront restaurant that also includes dining and swimming activities during the summer season.

The Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers are perfect for anglers, with a variety of fish including striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, summer flounder, and crab.

 

The commercial areas of Rumson are centered along East River Road and River Road. The Rumson Market, a general store; Le Bon Panier, a fancy-food takeout; the Rumson Pharmacy; and Crazie’s ice cream stand are among the banks and businesses in town. Popular restaurants in Rumson, NJ include the Fromagerie, which is continental; Hook, Line and Sinker, which serves seafood; and Barnacle Bill’s, a casual spot with peanut shells on the floor. There are more entertainment and shopping options in Red Bank compared to here. The closest large shopping center would be the Monmouth Mall and it’s six miles away in Eatontown.

The New Jersey Department of Education recently designated the Rumson Borough School District as a high-performing district. The Deane Porter School serves children from kindergarten through third grade, while the Forrestdale School caters to students from fourth through eighth grades. Students attend Rumson-Fairhaven Regional High School for ninth through twelfth grades. 

Rumson, NJ is a great town to both visit and live in. With countless options of nearby activities and attractions, beautiful water views, and a perfect location close to the beach, New York City, and Philidelphia, it doesn’t get much better. Families with young children looking to buy a home in Rumson will be able to enroll their kids in one of the highest-rated school systems in the state. It’s also among the safest towns in the state. The only downside is that living costs are higher than average in NJ.
